1.德育教育的基本概念。我国唐代的学者、散文家韩愈在《师说》中提到“师者, 所以传道、授业、解惑者也”, 19世纪德国教育家赫尔克特说过“道德普遍地被认为是人类最高目的, 因此也是教育的最高目的” (王平丽, 2007.9, 今日科苑) 。《国家中长期教育规划和发展纲要 (2010-2020) 》在战略主题中提到“立德树人, 把社会主义核心价值体系融入国民教育全过程, 加强以爱国主义为核心的民族精神和以改革创新为核心的时代精神教育” (《国家中长期教育规划和发展纲要 (2010-2020) 》, 2010) 。

2.大学英语教学的德育功能。教育必须有载体或者媒介, 言传身教的言与身就是媒介之所在, 同理文化的传播必然以语言作为重要的媒介。反过来讲, 任何语言学习和教学也不可能脱离母语文化而单独存在, 曾经热热闹闹的世界语 (Esperanto) 的推广正是因为没有文化根基而只能风光一时。大学英语作为一门课时、学分占比很高的课程, 总会在潜移默化中传递英语国家的文化, 忽略也罢, 重视也好, 她总是在那里。

然而, 决策层和学术界对于此问题的关注度还明显不够。2007年教育部颁发的《大学英语课程教学要求》描述教学目标时与德育教育有关的措词是“提高综合文化素养, 以适应我国社会发展和国际交流的需要” (《大学英语课程教学要求》, 2007) 。该文件将大学英语教学要求分成三个层次, 即一般要求、较高要求和更高要求。各层次分别对听力、口语、阅读、书面表达、翻译和词汇量作了规定, 对于德育教育没有明确提及。从文本可以解读出目标的设定侧重知识传授和技能训练, 对于文华素养的培养关注不够, 偏重于“术”而不是“道”。

在中国知网 (CNKI) 以德育教育为关键词, 包含大学英语进行搜索得到的相关论文有84篇。宏观论述居多, 具体事例较少。

3.实现途径 (文化对比) 。作者认为大学英语教学中的德育教育必须通过文化的对比来实现。在语言学习中涉及文化内容时坚持文化之间只有异同、没有高下的原则, 坚持观察而不评判的原则, 基于现代文明所形成的基本共识, 探究不同文明在对待自然、自我和他人时观念和行为方式上的异同, 力争取得他山之石、可以攻玉的效果。

二、优雅的双手 (Graceful hands) 一文中的德育教育

优雅的双手 (Graceful hands) 是新视野大学英语第三册第五单元的A篇课文, 作者从专业护理人员的角度讲述了自己与濒死的克拉克夫人相处最后一夜的故事。故事中, 克拉克夫人坦然谈论自己的死亡;为了避免家人难过而打发他们离开;将自己在人世弥留的最后一夜与作者一起度过。读者如果对东西方文化没有深入思考, 不熟悉文章来龙去脉也许并不会觉得文章有任何感人之处, 激发的最多只是同情和悲悯之情而已。然而笔者通过查阅资料, 进一步了解文章节选时被删除的内容, 认为可以从以下三个方面潜移默化地对学生进行德育教育, 打造一道文化大餐。

1.对待死亡。中国的儒家文化强调“未知生, 焉知死”, 以道家思想为基础的民间文化追求以各种方法延长生命, 直至长生。尽管在历史上出现过庄子这样在妻子死后鼓盆而歌的智者, 但是汉文化的主流是把谈论死亡看作一种禁忌 (taboo) , 担心公开地谈论死亡会带来死亡。在中国文化长期的历史中, “视死如视生”的观点促使人们追求厚葬, 墓穴与陪葬品高度追求与生人相似。

本篇文章中克拉克夫人坦然面对自己死亡的事例可以作为极好的契机进行启迪性的死亡教育。教学过程可以结合耶鲁关于死亡的公开课, BBC纪录片“人体漫游”的第七集 (死亡) 的内容让学生了解西方主流观点对待死亡的态度。耶鲁关于死亡的公开课主要从学术角度阐释死亡的定义, 过程等等, BBC“人体漫游”的第七集 (死亡) 讲述了主人公Herbie同意BBC拍摄自己从患癌症到死亡将近一年的过程, 从中可以看出主人公了知自己的疾病时的淡定与从容以及面对死亡来去自如的态度。 Herbie去世后他的妻子和亲朋按照他的遗嘱将他的骨灰撒在他生前种植的玫瑰花丛, 一位朋友唱起“如果你走了, 我们一起注视你离开” (If you go, let’s see you go) 。这些内容可以拿来和中国文化对于死亡的态度相比较, 和我们的厚葬之风相比较, 倡导陶渊明所提倡的“死去何所道, 托体同山河”, 同时也与我们今天所倡导的生态文明不谋而合。

2.对待家人。中国文化一直高度期待去世时家人、特别是子女, 尤其是儿子的陪伴, 传统的算命先生都会说上“生有几子, 几子送终”的话, 所以临终前的陪伴和人死后的嚎哭都被认为是理所当然之事。优雅的双手 (Graceful hands) 一文中主人公克拉克夫人在和作者不多的交流中断续提到“我把家人都打发回家了, 不想让他们看到……” (Isent…my family…home…tonight…didn’t want…them…to see…) 。这样的安排一方面说明克拉克夫人在面对死亡时的淡定与从容, 同时也说明她为家人所作的种种考虑。

3.对待他人。今天的中国社会, 医患关系高度紧张, 彼此之间互不信任, “医闹”流行直至伤医、杀医等事件频繁发生。如何重构医患之间的信任, 优雅的双手 (Graceful hands) 提供了另一种视角。故事中, 克拉克夫人谈到打发全家人离开, 却让作者留下 (You … stay…) 陪伴她走完人生最后的旅程。表面看来这似乎没有什么特别之处, 然而笔者通过查阅资料从省略掉的头尾发现作者其实是一个由于病人投诉正处于留岗查看的看护者, 克拉克夫人也一定了解作者的处境, 所以在生前安排了为作者“正名”。一方面她让作者陪伴走完人生的末路, 体现出对作者高度的信任, 另一方面在她死后的讣告中专门对作者的护理工作给予高度肯定, 从而在作为钢琴教师育人无数的基础上又在生命的终结之时, 为另一个正处于麻烦之中的生命提供了一只援助之手。

三、结语

综上所述, 只要为师者自身具备较高的东西方文化素养, 具备为事业投入的精神, 刻苦钻研, 勤于积累, 大学英语的教学完全可以在传授知识、训练技能之外对学生进行润物细无声的德育教育。
